We all have been living in a different world for a couple of months – confused, scared, but also ready to face all the challenges ahead. Watchmaking industry is not a safe oasis in this situation. In the end of April 2020 two of the biggest watchmaking exhibitions should have taken place one after the other for the first time in history – Watches & Wonders (formerly SIHH) and Baselworld. Thousands of experts, retailers, collectors and journalists would gather to be amazed by the novelties, presented by the best brands in the world. You guessed it – both events were canceled, followed by days of uncertainty and confusion – as in every other aspect of economy and life as a whole.
History taught us that us, however, that crisis gives opportunities. 24 hours ago Rolex and four of the big names in watchmaking - Patek Philippe, Chanel, Chopard and Tudor – announced their withdrawing from the Baselworld 2021 show. Together they are working with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) to create a new event in April 2021 for retailers, press and key collectors. That show will probably be in conjunction with, or linked to, the Watches & Wonders exhibition planned to take place during the same time frame. According to the release issued jointly by the brands, other brands may also join this new event. The FHH has not yet issued its formal announcement of plans.
What will be the following developments – we are looking forward to know. However, what is undisputable is that names with long-standing traditions and history are getting stronger in challenging times. And we all know that “Rolex doesn’t just tell time. It tells history”.
